Fighting Illini Travel To Dekalb
McGrady coming off career-best showing

Meet Preview
The Fighting Illini women's gymnastics squad faces the Huskies of Northern Illinois and the Chippewas of Central Michigan this Sunday, Jan. 29 in Dekalb, Ill. at 2:00 p.m. The Illini are coming off their best performance of the young season, as they handily defeated the Maryland Terrapins by a score of 192.450-190.400.
 
Notes On Northern Illinois
In their first meet of the season, Northern Illinois (190.850) walked away 1-1 as they defeated Ball State (187.775) but fell to UIC (192.050) in the first Huskie Triangular of the year.
 
NIU freshman Leah Johnson earned Mid-American Conference Gymnast of the Week after taking a share of the all-around title against UIC and Ball State (38.725). Johnson all-around total was highlighted by third-place finishes on beam (9.75) and vault (9.750).
 
Checking In With The Chippewas
Central Michigan opened the 2006 season with a dual meet loss to Bowling Green State University last weekend, falling by a score of 189.325-187.950. The Chippewas' best event on the night was vault where they posted a team score of 48.400.
 
Junior Jules Passy led the Chippewas in the loss as she won the uneven bars (9.675) as well as the all-around (37.800).
 
McGrady Magic
Sophomore Michelle McGrady put up a career showing at home against the Terps last weekend as she grabbed two first-place finishes with career highs on vault (9.875) and floor (9.825), shattering her old career highs of 9.800 and 9.600, respectively, on the two events. The sophomore is currently ranked 22nd on vault in the South Central Region.
 
Freshmen Consistently Contribute
Two weeks ago freshmen Kim Kruk and Julie Crall made names for themselves as they put up veteran-like scores in the first two meets of their careers. While Kruk and Crall have kept their marks high, freshmen Marijka Botterman and Lindsey Smith came into their own last week each setting season highs.
 
Botterman put up the first all-around performance of her career (37.600) with season highs on vault (9.750) and bars (9.700). Smith recorded her season high on vault (9.775).
 
Pomeroy Continues Hot Streak
Junior Cara Pomeroy added to her already impressive 2006 start last weekend as she placed first on bars with a season-high score of 9.850. Pomeroy also set a second personal best in the meet as she performed the first floor routine of her career, scoring a 9.650.
 
Wild Waking Up
After a slow start the first two meets of the season, senior Katie Wild put up second-place performances on beam (9.725) and floor (9.775) last week vs. Maryland. The senior is currently ranked 20th on beam in the South Central Region.

The Illini return home after their trip to Dekalb to host interstate rival Illinois State at Huff Hall on Saturday, Feb. 4 at 7 p.m. The Redbirds are currently 3-2 after defeating Southeast Missouri State last weekend by a score of 189.425-188.425.
