Women Gymnasts Set for NCAA Championships

NORMAN, Okla. — The No. 6 Oklahoma women’s gymnastics team will make its sixth appearance at the NCAA National Championships on April 20-22, in Corvallis, Ore., at the Gill Coliseum.

Oklahoma qualified for the championships on April 7, after winning the Central Regional in Baton Rouge, La., at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center. The Sooners finished with a 196.375 score and Louisiana State University came in second with a 195.825.

"We are extremely excited to be heading to the national championships," said head coach Steve Nunno. "We have been a very consistent team this year and the girls have really worked hard in the gym. We want to have fun and represent Oklahoma as best we can."

OU will be the No. 2 seed in the first session with No. 1 Alabama, No. 3 Nebraska, No. 4 Michigan, No. 5 LSU and No. 6 Utah. Seedings are based on who had the highest scores at the six regional meets.

The Sooners will start on vault in the first rotation and a complete schedule of the rotations are listed below. In its five prior appearances at the championships, OU has never advanced to the team finals.

The vault has been the Sooners’ best event this season and should get them off to a good start. The squad is currently ranked No. 2 in the nation on the apparatus and has compiled a 49.133 season average.

Brittney Koncak-Schumann continues to have an impressive season for the Sooners and will play a huge role in the team’s success. She has competed in the all-around in every meet this season and has won 24 individual titles. During regular-season meets she hit an impressive 37-of-40 routines for a 92.5 success rate and has won the all-around competition each of her last five meets including the Big 12 Championship and Central Regional.

"Brittney (Koncak-Schumann) has had a tremendous season and has been a great leader for the team," Nunno said. "But we are going to need a great meet from everybody if we want to advance to the team finals."

The championships begin Thursday, April 20, with the top three teams from each of the two sessions advancing to the team finals, the "Super Six", on Friday, April 21. The team finals will be aired by CBS on tape delay. The announcers will be Tim Brando and Amanda Borden and will air on Saturday, May 6, at 1 p.m. EST.
