LoPiccolo to Compete in Individual Finals
Corvallis, Ore. – Sophomore Stephanie LoPiccolo, of Melbourne, Australia, will be the lone gymnast to represent Oklahoma in the individual finals on Saturday, April 22, in Corvallis, Ore., at the Gill Coliseum.
LoPiccolo will be competing on bars in flight two of the finals, after posting a team-high 9.85 in the preliminary qualifier on Thursday, April 20. The mark put her in a tie for fourth and earned her first-team All-America honors.
LoPiccolo becomes the first Sooner to be named to the first team since Erin LaBarr, Tiffany Willin and Kasie Tamayo in 2004.
In 2006, LoPiccolo has performed on bars in nine meets and set a career-high 9.95 versus Texas Woman’s University on March 3. The mark earned her a first-place finish and was her first career individual title.
At the Big 12 Championships, on March 25, LoPiccolo posted another stellar performance on bars (9.85) and tied for first place.
The individual finals will begin Saturday, April 22, at 7 p.m. in the Gill Coliseum on the Oregon State University campus. In program history, Kelly Garrison is the only Sooner to have won an individual national title. Garrison won four titles including two in the all-around (1987, 1988), one on bars (1988) and one on beam (1988).
The Sooners ended the 2006 season with a disappointing sixth-place finish in the first preliminary session of the NCAA National Championships on Thursday, April 20. OU posted a 195.525 team score and recorded solid performances on beam (48.875), bars (48.925), vault (48.750) and floor (48.975).
Brittney Koncak-Schumann and Kiara Redmond earned All-America honors on the second team in the all-around.
Redmond had the best finish for Oklahoma in the all-around posting a 39.225 and finishing in seventh place, while Koncak-Schumann came in eighth with a 39.125. Both gymnasts also finished in a tie for eighth on floor exercise and were named to the second team.
The top four individual performers, including ties, in each preliminary session are named to the first team. Individuals who finish in the top eight earn second-team honors.
